1873 $5 South Carolina Railroad Company Fare Ticket
Offered here is an original 1873 five-dollar fare note issued by the South Carolina Rail Road Company, a historically significant private rail line that operated extensively throughout the southeastern United States during the 19th century. This piece is a printed fare ticket, valid for one passenger to travel one hundred miles. It is dated July 1st, 1873 and printed by the American Bank Note Company of New York, a prominent printer of secure financial documents during this era. The obverse features detailed engravings, including a depiction of an early steam locomotive in profile. The central vignette illustrates a classic 4-4-0 American-style locomotive marked "No. 13," pulling a tender and passenger cars, with detailed rural scenery in the background. The left and right borders are anchored by large oval medallions with the denomination "5" surrounded by intricate guilloche designs. The serial number "3240" appears in red ink in the upper corners. The note reads, "Good for the fare of one passenger one hundred miles" and includes printed signatures, including that of the Secretary and the President of the company at the time. The reverse displays an ornate geometric design in green ink, with symmetrical flourishes and patterned borders typical of anti-counterfeiting design practices of the time. The reverse is entirely printed with no additional text beyond a decorative border.
