1873 $5 Closed 3 MS63 PCGS. More than 100,000 half eagles were minted in 1873, including both the Close 3 and Open 3 varieties. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2006) write that: "The Close 3 variety is thought to be the rarer of the two." The Select example that we offer in this lot displays lustrous peach-gold surfaces with generally well defined motifs, though we mention an area of weakness in the upper shield. A few minute marks consistent with the grade level are visible on both sides. Light peripheral die cracks occur on both obverse and reverse.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
