It has long been believed that originals and restrikes exist of the Open 3 coins, and that all Open 3s were produced later in the calendar year than the Closed 3 pieces. However, it is now generally understood that both Open and Closed 3 pieces were minted in 1873, making the terms "original" and "restrike" meaningless, as restrikes by definition must be struck at some time after the official year of issuance. There are two variants of Open 3 three dollars. One shows a die scratch from the F in OF to the rim (formerly termed "original" and the die state from which this coin was struck). The other shows a much fainter die scratch, the first S in STATES is filled, and there is evidence of die rust on the reverse."<BR>It is believed that somewhere between 10 and 14 examples exist today of both types of Open 3 proofs. That would make the Open 3 the second rarest three dollar, second only to the unique 1870-S. This so-called "original" striking is deeply reflective in the fields and the devices display thick mint frost that yields a strong cameo contrast on each side. Magnification reveals that this coin was struck from a planchet that shows microscopic evidence of planchet flaking, and there are very light, small, reddish spots on each side that are probably a result of improper mixture of the gold/copper alloy. A very pleasing, problem-free example of this extremely rare three dollar gold piece. </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed>No Prior Data Recorded </TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium.
