1873 $3 Closed 3 MS61 PCGS. Among three dollar gold issues, a series replete with rarities and enigmatic issues, the 1873 Closed 3 is unique as the only business strike three dollar gold piece without a recorded mintage. The number of pieces originally produced is generally conceded to be between 600 and 1,000 coins, but these are only estimates. The few known Mint State survivors are known to possesses distinctive prooflike qualities, as does this flashy example. Abrasions are fairly numerous, but evenly distributed with none being worthy of individual mention. Look for considerable bidder interest on this dazzling, unquestionably elusive 1873 Closed 3. Population: 5 in 61, 4 finer (2/08).

Coin Engraver: James B.
