1873 2C Open 3 PR55 ANACS. A lightly circulated proof 1873
1873<2C> Open 3 PR55 ANACS. A lightly circulated proof example. The Open 3 two cent coins have been considered restrikes by many, including apparently Walter Breen, who added a question mark after the word in his Complete Encyclopedia, following which he wrote, "Rare. Knobs of 3 over a knob's width apart. Usually weak in central azure and upper third to sixth red stripes. Sometimes carelessly made. Possibly 10 times are rare as [Closed 3 varieties}." This example is a trifle weak on the azures, but not especially so on the stripes. Light rub is evident on the highpoints, but there are few mentionable abrasions or other distractions, and the surfaces are a smooth, glossy medium brown.
