1873 2C Closed 3 PR66 Red and Brown NGC. The end of the Civil War and the emergence of the United States from the decade of the 1860s allowed the nation's monetary system to begin a return, however slow, to normalcy. By 1873, the Two Cent piece, which the public had greeted with open arms at its debut in 1864, was no longer needed or desired in active circulation. As such, the denomination disappeared that year, but not before 600 proofs were produced. These originals, as they are called by numismatists, are distinguished from the restrikes by a Closed 3 in the date. Undoubtedly among the finest survivors of the original delivery, the color of this coin varies greatly with light angle. Indirect angles display a pleasing blend of olive and medium brown patina, whereas seemingly full orange-red luster dominates as the coin rotates into the light. The fully brought up features are devoid of singularly mentionable contact marks, hairlines, and carbon flecks. Population: 28 in 66 Red and Brown, only one is finer with this color designation (10/02).From the Ohio Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
