1873 $20 Open 3 MS63 PCGS. This Type Two double eagle issue is considered a common date in the context of this short-lived design type. However, in MS63 grade it is an important condition rarity as the PCGS population data shows. Both sides have soft, frosty luster with brilliant yellow-gold color and few abrasions.
Of the basic types of double eagles, the Type Two design, with the addition of the IN GOD WE TRUST motto on the reverse and the denomination abbreviated TWENTY D., is considerably rarer in Mint State grades than either the Type One or Type Three designs. The Type Three design is common due to substantial hoards from Europe and elsewhere. The Type One design is available thanks to three important treasure discoveries. But the Type Two double eagles did not figure in many European holdings, and had not been minted when the treasure ships went down. Population: 95 in 63, 5 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
