1873 $20 Open 3 MS63 PCGS. A very attractive coin for the grade with strong luster in the fields and exceptional quality for a Type II double eagle. The strike is typically sharp, with no weakness present. Apparently the double eagles of this period were shipped about in loose containers which allowed for the abundance of bagmarks, and obtaining an example from this period in Gem grades is virtually impossible. Furthermore, no vast shipwrecks have been recovered which contain sparkling Mint State coins by the thousands for collectors as seen from the 1850s and early 1860s. Thus, the number of MS63 Type II double eagles remain quite small, and finding a coin in higher grade requires not only patience, but a substantial sum of money. For identification purposes, there is a moderate nick from below Liberty's eye to the curl near above her ear, and a minor scuff near the ribbon below the I of AMERICA.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
