1873 $20 Closed 3 MS61 NGC. The high water mark for Type Two double eagle mintages occurred in 1873 when Philadelphia coined 1.7 million pieces. Open 3 and Closed 3 varieties were coined during the year, with Closed 3 pieces struck in limited quantities during the first couple of months. Although separate mintage figures for the two varieties are not recorded, the existence of monthly coinage data might give a ballpark range. Another approach is a population comparison. NGC and PCGS have certified 9,712 double eagles of 1873, with just 444 (4.6%) of the Closed 3 variety, suggesting a Closed 3 mintage of only 78,000 coins, the fifth lowest of any Type Two issue. Though lightly abraded, this frosty orange-gold piece is highly attractive with hints of pale pink toning.

Coin Engraver: James B.
