1873 $20 Closed 3 MS61 NGC.
1873 $20 Closed 3 MS61 NGC. Much more elusive than its Open 3 counterpart, the Closed 3 was struck only for a brief period early in the year. According to Walter Breen's Encyclopedia, Chief Coiner Archibald Loudon Snowden wrote a letter of complaint to Mint Director James Pollock on January 18, 1873. Pollock responded with an order to Chief Engraver William Barber to produce new logotypes with an Open 3 that could not be mistaken for an 8 with the naked eye. Mint State survivors are decidedly rare, and only the availability of the Open 3 variety has made the Closed 3 affordable in Uncirculated grades. This lustrous and bright representative is crisply struck and not excessively abraded. Population: 7 in 61, 4 finer (11/03).Ex: Eagle Collection of $20 Liberties, FUN Signature Sale (Heritage, 1/2002), lot 4060, which realized $2.530. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
