1873 $2 and $5 South Carolina Railroad Fare Notes
A pair of engraved South Carolina Rail Road Company fare notes, comprising one $2 and one $5 denomination, both issued in Charleston. The $2 ticket, serial number 12034, is dated July 1st, 1873, and features a vignette of horse-drawn carts transporting cotton bales with a locomotive at lower center. The $5 ticket, serial number 1235, bears the same date and showcases a detailed steam locomotive at center, with ornate "5" counters and symmetrical foliate devices. Both notes are printed in green and black ink with red serial numbers, and they state they are "Good for the fare of one passenger" over a specified distance' twenty-five and one hundred and twenty-five miles respectively. Each is signed by J.C. Welsman as Secretary. Versos are elaborately printed by the American Bank Note Company with intricate guilloche patterns. The reverse of both feature green floral geometric vignette bearing at the top and bottom "American Bank Note Co/ New York".
