<B>1873 1C Open 3 MS65 Red NGC.</B></I> The modified 3 in the date was done after January 13, 1873, when Chief Coiner Archibald Louden Snowden made a formal complaint about the similarity between the 3 punch that was used in the date and an 8. Full red coins are scarce of both varieties, but the Open 3 is slightly more available. This piece shows rich pinkish-tinged red surfaces and bright fields. Sharply struck on the obverse, only the top of the shield on the reverse shows any signs of weakness. Census: 6 in 65, 1 finer (6/07).<BR><BR><B>Coin Engraver:</B> James B.
