1873<1C> Doubled LIBERTY MS64 Red and Brown PCGS. FS-009, Snow-1. Discovered by Walter Breen in 1957, this error is widely recognized as the "Chief" of the Indian Cent series. Snow (1992) estimates that only 50 examples are extant in all grades, and he lists a Condition Census that ranges in grade from AU58 through MS64. This is the more dramatic and more desirable Type One Doubled Die of 1873, properly called a Class V, with pivoted hub doubling, the pivot at 6 o'clock. The reddish-golden surfaces show interspersed greenish-tan and red-to-purple-red coloration, the striking details are well brought up in all areas, and there are no distracting marks on either side. For pedigree purposes, one tiny contact mark is seen under the N of CENT. Population: 8 in 64 Red and Brown, 2 finer (6/06).
From The New York Eye Appeal Collection.
