1873 1C Doubled LIBERTY MS64 Red and Brown NGC. F
1873<1C> Doubled LIBERTY MS64 Red and Brown NGC. FS-009, Snow-1. Discovered in 1957, this error is widely recognized as the "Chief" of the Indian Cent series. Snow (1992) estimates that only 50 examples are extant in all grades, and he lists a Condition Census that ranges in grade from AU58 through MS64. A solidly graded near-Gem the surfaces are expectantly clean for the assigned grade with only a couple of mentionable abrasions in the left obverse field. Mottled tan-blue toning in the centers yields to blushes of golden-orange luster at the borders. Both major grading services have seen just 12 coins at the MS64 Red and Brown grade level, and there are only six certified finer with this color designation (6/05).
Doubling on all features of Liberty's portrait is the diagnostic feature of this prized error. The doubling is most readily evident on Liberty's eyes, the feather stems, and, especially, the letters in LIBERTY.
