1873 1C Doubled LIBERTY MS62 Brown NGC. FS-009, Snow-1. In addition to the letters in the word LIBERTY, doubling is evident on Liberty's eye, lips, and nose tip. This variety is widely regarded as the "King," or perhaps "Chief" (as stated by Fivaz and Stanton, 2000) of the Indian Cents. Examples are in demand at all levels of preservation, with Mint State survivors being particularly elusive in today's market. NGC and PCGS combined have seen only 22 Uncirculated coins with brown surfaces (10/02), and the present example falls roughly in the middle of the grade distribution for these coins. The toning is a rich, medium brown shade with splashes of deeper color over the right central reverse and the middle of the right wreath. The toning assumes a slightly streaky appearance in certain areas at direct angles, through which remnants of faded mint luster can still be observed. A few abrasions over and before the obverse portrait are not outwardly or individually distracting, but they do seem to preclude a higher grade.
