1873 1C Closed 3 MS66 Red and Brown NGC. The initial 1873 Indian Cents produced in the Philadelphia Mint display a Closed 3 in the date. It did not take Mint personnel long to figure out that, with this feature, the coins looked as though they were dated 1878. A change to the Open 3 variant soon followed. Another, and even finer Red and Brown example, this coin is fully lustrous on the reverse with lovely orange-red color on that side. Plenty of original luster also remains on the obverse with some muting to pale lilac hues also in evidence. The slightly streaky appearance of the obverse is not uncommon for the issue and it was caused by an improperly mixed alloy in the planchet. There are, however, few post-production features of note, a pair of faint swirls in the upper obverse field being mentioned more for accuracy than anything else. Population: 8 in 66 Red and Brown, 0 finer (11/02). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
