1873 1C Doubled Die Obverse, Closed 3 MS65 Red PCGS. FS-009.1, Snow-2. IBERTY is moderately doubled to the east, a kind of doubling that Snow calls "pivoted hub doubling" with the pivot at 8 o'clock, a cousin to the famous Guide Book variety. Snow's 1992 Flying Eagle & Indian Cents provides an R.6 rarity rating and a Condition Census with the top coin an MS64. While those figures are almost certainly outdated by now due to the popularity of Indian cent collecting, few 1873 Indian cents of any stripe can compare with this one. Generous amounts of mint red cling to both sides, with greenish-tan centers deepening to magenta at the peripheries. The strike is sharp, and visible carbon is absent. NGC has certified only two examples as Red, an MS62 and an MS64. Believed to be the single finest PCGS-certified example (PCGS does not separate the population data for Snow-2 from the Closed 3 data.) Accompanied by an Eagle Eye Photo Seal certificate.

Coin Engraver: James B.
