1873 10C Closed 3 MS66 PCGS. The silver-gray surf
1873<10C> Closed 3 MS66 PCGS. The silver-gray surfaces display somewhat flashier luster on the reverse, and are visited by a crescent of pale purple toning along the left (facing) obverse border, and deep cobalt-blue and purple patina along the left (facing) reverse border. The design elements are nicely struck, and there are no significant marks about. The 1873 Closed 3 is an unexpectedly elusive issue despite a sizeable original mintage (1.5 million pieces). Apparently, many examples were melted when Congress increased the weight of the Dime from 2.49 grams to 2.50 grams in February of this year. The elusiveness of this coin is evident from the population reports, which as of March 2005 show that PCGS and NGC combined have certified just 7 examples at this grade level, with only one finer. Population: 5 in 66, 0 finer (3/05).
