1872-S S$1 MS62 NGC. All of the Seated Dollar issues from the San Francisco Mint are elusive, if not downright unobtainable. Only four issues in this series display an S mintmark: the 1859-S is scarce-to-rare in most grades; the 1870-S is virtually unobtainable with only 10 examples listed in Bowers' 1993 Silver Dollar Encyclopedia; the 1872-S is elusive in most grades with a limited original mintage; and the final-year 1873-S is unknown in any collection. This fortunate Mint State survivor of the '72-S delivery probably survived purely by chance. The virtual lack of toning allows full appreciation of the moderately bright, semi-reflective fields. Seated Dollars of most dates are not known for sharp striking definition. That said, this coin is better than most with overall bold definition that only wanes appreciably over Liberty's head and the eagle's left (facing) talon. A smattering of light handling marks, most of which are evident on the obverse, are not out of context with the BU designation. NGC and PCGS combined have seen only 16 Uncirculated 1872-S Dollars in grades that range from MS61-MS64 (1/03). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
