1872-S 50C MS64 PCGS. WB-102. The mintmark that the San Francisco Mint used to deliver 1872-S Halves of the WB-102 variety is different in both size and style to that on any previous issue in this series. Wiley and Bugert describe it as a "Medium-Small Mintmark," and they assign WB-102 a high R.6 rating in Mint State. Actually, both varieties of the 1872-S (580,000 pieces produced) are rare in Mint State with just five near-Gems certified at NGC and PCGS combined. There are only four pieces finer (10/02). Fully brought up and possessed of razor sharp definition throughout, this coin is richly frosted with swirling cartwheel luster effects. There are no conspicuous abrasions, although accuracy compels us to mention a few well concealed toning spots on the reverse. Mottled charcoal-russet shadings hug the denticles of this otherwise lilac and steel-gray colored example. This is the finest 1872-S Half to appear in one of our Signature Sales since at least 1993.
