1872-S $5 MS61 NGC
1872-S $5 MS61 NGC. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2006) write that the 1872-S half eagle is a very rare issue in any grade. The NGC/PCGS population figures confirm this, and indicate that most survivors seem to be in the Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated grade range. A mere three Mint State pieces have been seen, all MS61 NGC-graded.
Lustrous brassy-gold surfaces abound on this Uncirculated example, and the semi-prooflike fields highlight the motifs. An attentive strike brings out sharp definition on the design elements, save for minor softness in the arrow feathers and the eagle's neck feathers. Light, inoffensive handling marks evenly scattered about preclude a higher grade.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
