1872-S $20 MS62 PCGS. Bowers, in A Guide Book of Doubl
1872-S $20 MS62 PCGS. Bowers, in A Guide Book of Double Eagle Gold Coins states that the highest auction price ever paid for a 1872-S double eagle was $8,625, for lot 840 of the May, 2000 Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection auction. We are unaware of any subsequent sales results that would challenge this record, which was established by this very coin. It was described at that time as

Reflective, mirrored fields and lustrous orange-gold devices provide an attractive cameo effect. Light surface marks are noted on both obverse and reverse. A very rare issue in high grades, with nearly all of the 20 to 30 Mint State survivors just MS60 in quality. Incredibly, the market value of this piece is only in the range of a couple of thousand dollars. Talk about potential!

Six and a half years later, PCGS has certified a total of 38 coins of the date in Mint State grades, and still none are finer than this piece. It is fully prooflike, although PCGS does not certify gold coins as such. It is also blessed with a strong strike for the issue, with full detail showing on all stars, although Liberty's hair is flat, as often found. Population: 3 in 62, 0 finer (11/06).
Ex: Parke-Bernet (5/68), lot 45; Harry W.
