1872 S$1 PR67 NGC. Ex: Pittman. In terms of total number of coins known, the 1872 is among the more readily obtainable issues in the entire proof Seated Dollar series of 1840-1873. Survivors from the 950-coin delivery, however, exist in smaller percentages than those of many of the lower mintage No Motto dates from the Civil War era. This coin displays the originality and strong technical merits that one would expect for a proof Seated coin pedigreed to both the Pittman and Kaufman collections. A dusting of lavender-gray toning is distributed over both sides in a more or less even manner. Swirls of champagne, lilac, apricot, and powder-blue colors compete for dominance among the undertones. Both sides are fully struck with smooth, virtually pristine surfaces. PCGS has seen only one 1872 at the PR67 level, and our records do not report an auction appearance for that coin. NGC reports two PR67 specimens, this coin and the example that sold as lot 375 in Superior's Orlando Sale of August 10, 1992. Neither grading service has certified a single piece finer (1/03).Ex: Frederic Geiss Sale (B. Max Mehl, 2/1947), lot 371; John Jay Pittman Collection (Akers, 5/1998), lot 1698.From the Philip Kaufman Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment.
