1872 Pattern Commercial $1. J-1214 PCGS PR62
1872 Pattern Commercial Dollar. Silver, reeded edge. Judd-1214. Pollock-1355. PCGS graded Proof 62. A satiny silver gray specimen with medium dove-color toning that includes a few zephyr-like wisps of iridescence on both sides. Boldly struck for this scarce Pattern date, certainly much finer than few others that have turned up on the auction circuit in recent decades. Pattern issues of 1872 are not all that common. Judd-1214 incorporates William Barber's copy of the Longacre "Indian Princess" design with thirteen stars on the flag. The standard Commercial dollar reverse is paired to this. Commercial dollars were first proposed (and struck as Patterns) the year before. The weight of 420 grains, which is the same as the adopted Trade dollar, tells us this was the precursor to that much-troubled circulating Trade coin (PCGS # 61485)
