1872 G$1 PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC. The 1872 One dollar proof shows a mintage of 30 pieces. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, in their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, 1795-1933, write: "More 1872 coins have been offered for sale that others of the series with mintages of less than 50. The 1872 gold dollar is another date that appears to have a survival rate greater than the original mintage. When studying the rarity of any gold coin, the population date can be very misleading. It is very common for a rare coin to have been resubmitted multiple times in search of a higher grade. this can mean thousands of dollars on some coins, and dealers and collectors can be persistent."

Garrett and Guth suggest that no more than 20 1872 dollar proofs have survived; Walter Breen, writing in his Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins, estimates 13 to 17 pieces are extant. PCGS and NGC have seen a total of 10 proofs to date, seven Cameo proofs, and seven "Deep/Ultra Cameo" examples.

The brass-gold surfaces of the current PR67 Ultra Cameo display astonishing gold-on-black contrast. The design elements are exquisitely brought up, and impart bold definition to the bonnet, the letters of LIBERTY, the hair, and to the intricacies of the reverse wreath. Some die polish lines are noted in the fields of each side, and a minor planchet defect to the upper right of the first S in STATES may help to identify the coin. A couple of faint linear marks at the upper part of Liberty's head are mentioned for accuracy. Census: 3 in 67 Ultra Cameo, 0 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
