1872 G$1 PR67 Deep Cameo NGC. The 1872 proof Gold
1872 G$1 PR67 Deep Cameo NGC. The 1872 proof Gold Dollar is a major gold rarity, but it has all too often passed unnoticed as such. Only 30 proofs were struck with an estimated only 14-16 pieces believed extant today. Current population figures indicate this may be quite high. The obverse die is the same as was used on 1871 proofs, the reverse die exhibits the date that is almost centered with the 7 below the second L of DOLLAR, and 18 apart.
There is no question as to the originality of this coin as the details of the head and wreath are razor-sharp and the fields display an extremely deep mirror finish. A deeply frosted appearance on the devices yields a strong cameo effect. Even with magnification, one finds it virtually impossible to detect any post-striking problems or spotting. A couple of tiny planchet flakes (as struck) are noted for future pedigree purposes; one near the lower truncation of Liberty's bust and one in the right reverse field between the 2 of the date and the wreath. Also, a squiggly lintmark is seen in the field below Liberty's lowest hair curl and the final A of AMERICA. To date (2/05), the finest graded 1872 Gold Dollar is a PCGS PR65. A rare opportunity for the advanced gold specialist to purchase the single finest known specimen.
