<B>1872 G$1 MS67 Prooflike NGC.</B></I> It ranks as one of the five finest certified by NGC, and one of the two finest prooflike pieces graded by the firm. Undoubtedly a business strike, yet with the outward appearance of a Superb Cameo proof, this piece will easily delight the connoisseur of the highest quality gold pieces. Every detail is bold with full prooflike surfaces around the frosty devices. Rich yellow color is enhanced by wisps of pink toning. The reverse shows a single splash of orange toning.<BR> Just 3,500 business strikes were minted, and pieces are rarely encountered today. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth note that the "date is sporadically offered for sale." Later in the same paragraph of their <I>Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins</B></I>, they compare rarity and price: "given the date's scarcity, prices for the issue seem undervalued at current levels."
