1872 G$1 Barber's Amazonian Gold Dollar, Judd-1225, Pollock-1367, Low R.7, PR64 Gilt NGC. William Barber's "Amazonian Gold" design has a bust of Liberty facing left, her hair flowing behind her head and below the bust truncation, wearing a Phrygian cap inscribed Liberty. There are 13 stars along the border and the date is below the bust. The reverse is similar to the Amazonian silver design with an eagle, wings spread, grasping three arrows in its right claw, its left leg raised up to support a shield. A ribbon crosses the shield with the inscription IN GOD WE TRUST. Around is the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and below is the denomination ONE DOL. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.
Approximately a dozen examples of this variety are known, several gilded like this piece. A similar gilded set was in the Harry Bass Collection, and is now on loan to the American Numismatic Association. Complete sets of this denomination are also held by the Smithsonian Institution and the Durham Western Heritage Museum. This example is sharply struck with highly lustrous yellow-gold surfaces. Both sides have faint granularity, almost certainly created during the gilding process. A few toning freckles are evident on each side. Careful examination of each denomination in the Amazonian gold series reveals that both the obverse and reverse have minor design differences. Rather than creating one design and reducing it to the proper size for each denomination, it appears as if Barber created separate individual dies.
From The Jones Beach Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
