1872-CC $5 AU58 NGC. Somewhat better struck than usual
1872-CC<$5> AU58 NGC. Somewhat better struck than usual for this issue with the normally found weakness in the centers, but well defined on the peripheral stars and lettering. Very lustrous with rich reddish tinted surfaces. There is minimal wear and the fields lack the typical deep marks seen on this issue. As of July 2006, this piece is tied with three other NGC pieces and a single PCGS example as the highest graded 1872-CC half eagle.
This is a much rarer date than its original mintage figure of 16,980 pieces would suggest. There are an estimated 70-80 pieces known with just six to eight in About Uncirculated grades and none in Uncirculated. In AU grades, the 1872-CC is tied as the second rarest Carson City half eagle (along with the 1873-CC), and it is one of just two half eagles from this mint (the 1878-CC is the other) that remains unknown in Uncirculated condition. In the Bowers and Merena July 2002 sale, a PCGS AU50 example of this date sold for a robust $25,875.
