1872-CC $5 AU50 NGC. This rare half eagle hails from early in the life of the Carson City Mint, which struck its first coins--the largest three denominations each in gold and silver--only two years before. Precious-metal coinage was desperately needed in the burgeoning West. Establishment of a mint in Nevada allowed the United States to coin silver from Nevada's Comstock Lode, whose production peaked in about 1878, as well as the considerable amounts of gold also mined from the surroundings, without the necessity for the perilous transport to San Francisco.
Rusty Goe's The Mint on Carson Street (2003) notes concerning this issue, "At the turn of the 21st century, the 1872-CC is the only date in the Carson City half eagle series that has not had a specimen graded in Mint State condition by either PCGS or NGC. At the top of the Condition Census are two AU-58 specimens (possibly the same coin). Survival percentage estimates for the 1872-CC half eagles are lower than any other date in the series, with less than 0.5% extant." Today, in 2007, those statements are still true, as not a single Mint State example shows at either service. The present piece features light, grade-consistent contact marks, attesting to a short time in circulation, over the khaki-gold surfaces. Considerable luster remains in the protected areas, especially on the reverse, and the strike is surprisingly well executed. Census: 4 in 50, 15 finer (3/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
