1872-CC<25C> AU55 PCGS. Only 22,850 pieces were struck of this important Carson City rarity. All were struck from one obverse die, which is distinguished by a diagonal die scratch in the lower portion of the shield. However, a second obverse die was produced but apparently never used. A photo of this second die is on page 171 of Larry Briggs reference for the Seated quarter series. When located, the 1872-CC is almost always low grade and shows impairments. Pieces that are XF or AU are very rare. At the AU55 level, this is one of only three pieces certified with two finer (both Mint State pieces). The surfaces of this piece are finely porous, as often seen. We speculate that this may from the coins being struck from unalloyed Comstock silver, as happened on dimes from the early 1870s. Sharply struck, the surfaces are light gray overall with traces of deeper russet toning around the outer devices.
