<B>1872-CC $20 AU58 PCGS.</B></I> An amazing piece that ranks as one of the most important double eagles offered in this sale. PCGS has only certified two finer examples of this date, or about one for every 10 years of coin grading. This date is one of the great condition rarities in the Liberty double eagle series. The mintage was 26,900 coins, actually a substantial quantity for the denomination and minting facility. Of course, nearly all of those coins entered circulation at the time, and today only a few have survived in Mint State grades. This frosty piece has excellent surfaces with few marks of any type, and brilliant light yellow-gold luster.
