1872-CC $20 AU55 NGC. Comstock Lode miners depositing gold ore at the Carson City Mint could request either gold coins, gold bars, or certificates of deposit drawn on San Francisco banks, according to Carson City Mint expert-author Rusty Goe. In the third year of coinage at Carson City, even though gold deposits rose, only 16% was minted into gold coins. That mint struck only 26,900 examples of the 1872-CC double eagle, and today most examples seen are in lower grades (including the Smithsonian piece, a Very Fine). Garrett and Guth note that the About Uncirculated population data are greatly skewed by resubmissions. This piece offers typical, moderately abraded surfaces with much luster remaining and somewhat prooflike orange-gold surfaces.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
