1872-CC $10 XF45 NGC. Winter 1-A. The Carson City Mint mated a single obverse die with the two leftover reverse dies of the 1870-CC delivery to produce 4,600 Liberty Eagles in 1872. The present example was struck from the same reverse die as the 1870-CC example in this collection. The overall definition is a little soft for the assigned grade, but this is not because the coin is overgraded. Rather, the '72-CC is typically found with a below average strike that is inferior to that seen on most extant 1870-CC and 1871-CC Eagles. Bluntness of detail is noted in the centers, most noticeably on the reverse over the eagle's neck feathers. All major design elements are appreciably well outlined, nonetheless, and flickers of original luster are seen in a few isolated areas. A mostly green-gold example with no sizeable or singularly distracting circulation marks. The 1872-CC ranks sixth in overall rarity among Carson City Eagles after the 1870-CC, 1879-CC, 1878-CC, 1873-C, and 1877-CC. Only 60-70 pieces are believed extant (per Winter / Halperin, 2001), precious few of which grade finer than XF40.From the Ashland City Collection.
