1872-CC<$10> XF40 PCGS. In his 2001 reference Gold Coins of the Carson City Mint, Douglas Winter opined that the 1872-CC is tied with the 1873-CC as the rarest Carson City Eagle in high grades. Small numbers of later Carson City issues were exported to foreign countries, to return many decades later when their numismatic value had been established. This was not the case for the 1872-CC, and its small production of 4,600 pieces was gradually whittled down from frontier usage into a few dozen survivors, mostly in Fine to AU grades. The present example displays generous portions of deep orange luster, and the chestnut-brown fields and devices are not objectionably abraded.
