1872 5C MS66 PCGS. The defects on this well preserved 1872
1872<5C> MS66 PCGS. The defects on this well preserved coin are Mint-made, although not a recognizable one of the several Cherrypickers' varieties for this issue. The digits of the date are quite crowded and close to the rim, and there appear to be extra blobs of metal to the right of the 8 and 7 in the date. Above the 7 there is a small arc that appears to be a repunched numeral of some kind (a 2?). Numerous die cracks are seen throughout the obverse: one joins the legend and cross; another joins the bottoms of the devices; a third runs from the leaves to the rim at 3 o'clock. On the reverse, the stars and legends show strike doubling, and the bottom loop of the S in CENTS is mostly missing, apparently a die defect. The preservation of this coin, fortunately, is in much better shape than its execution, with glowing soft luster and pretty gray-gold patina. Population: 12 in 66, 0 finer (6/06).
