1872 $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle, Judd-1243, Pollock-1385, High R.7, PR67 Brown NGC. The regular issue design for the Liberty Head half eagle. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. This is an extremely rare variety with only about four, or possibly five, examples known today. A few others were produced in aluminum, and they are equally rare. Numismatic tradition suggests that these pieces were die trials struck to test the dies before striking proof examples in gold, although it is more likely that they were deliberately made for sale to collectors of the time. Whatever there original purpose may have been, the copper and aluminum strikings are extremely rare and highly desirable today. This example is a remarkable glittering proof with deeply mirrored fields and excellent cameo contrast. Both sides have rich mahogany color with intense blue and iridescent toning. A few faint spots may assist in pedigree research, especially over the extreme left serif of E in UNITED.
From The Jones Beach Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
