<B>1872 $3 MS62 NGC.</B></I> Ex: Reed. This low-mintage issue is an important rarity among coins of this denomination, with a total production that was limited to 2,000 coins. Mint State examples of this date are especially elusive, although a limited number of serious date collectors has kept prices at reasonable levels. A similar rarity in a series such as Liberty double eagles, for example, would fetch a comparatively huge price. This cameo example has pleasing orange-gold color with frosted devices and fully mirrored fields. The surfaces exhibit a few light marks, but none of any significance.
