1872<25C> Quarter Dollar, Judd-1197, Pollock-1337, R.8, PR64 Cameo PCGS. The obverse features a classic representation of Liberty, seated left with her right hand outstretched and resting on the head of an eagle. Her left hand holds a sword, and that arm is propped up on a shield. Thirteen stars encircle the border and the date 1872 is below. An eagle with spread wings and three arrows in its right talon is the depicted at the center of the reverse. The left talon supports a shield, in front of which is an olive branch and over which is draped a ribbon inscribed with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is at the upper border and the denomination QUAR. DOL. is at the lower border. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge.
The Amazonian patterns of 1872 are attributed to William Barber. Long considered one of the most beautiful designs in U.S. coinage history, the term "Amazonian" appears to have originated with the Lorin G. Parmelee Collection Sale of June 1890. The catalogers for that sale, H. P. Smith and David Proskey, apparently likened Liberty to the mythical female Amazonian warriors because of her warlike pose with sword and shield. The aluminum composition Quarter is the most elusive of three varieties, having also been produced in silver and copper. Only a handful are examples known to exist. This well contrasted specimen displays excellent contrast in spite of modest haziness in the centers. Two curved streaks of discoloration on the reverse are not particularly distracting, but mentioned more for future attribution. Easily one of the highlights in this extensive offering of U.S. patterns.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
