1872 25C Quarter Dollar, Judd-1195, Pollock-1335, Low R.7, PR64 PCGS. William Barber's Amazonian design with Liberty seated, facing left, her right hand touching the head of a spread-wing eagle, sword in left hand. Thirteen stars are on the upper portion of that side with the date below. The reverse has a reversed variant of the eagle seen on the obverse, denomination below and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around much of the perimeter on that side. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. According to USPatterns.com: "The Amazonian name dates to the 1890 New York Coin and Stamp auction of the Lorin G. Parmelee collection and was probably given by David Proskey." <BR> The Amazonian design is one of the most popular and widely collected of all patterns. It is also certainly the epitome of William Barber's talents as an engraver. This design was issued in three-coin sets of quarter, half dollar, and silver dollar. In addition to silver, it was also struck in copper and aluminum. The surfaces are bright and reflective with an overlay of medium blue toning that lightens to pale yellow around the margins. There are at least seven separate specimens are known of this pattern, plus two or three in complete silver sets. Two examples have an unclear pedigree and may represent that many additional examples on the roster of known specimens. This piece is listed as the # 5 coin.
