1872 $20 PR63 Cameo NGC. This is a plea
1872<$20> PR63 Cameo NGC. This is a pleasing cameo example despite hazy blue color in the fields, masking some light hairlines and faint slide marks. There is no doubt that this appearance was accounted for when this important Type Two proof was certified. As on all 30 proof examples struck on February 3, this example has a heavy date with the digit 1 close to the bust and the border. All digits are closely spaced, but none actually touch. The reverse has a heavy rust pit on the upright of R in AMERICA, a bit below the crossbar. Somewhat less than half the original mintage survives to this day, perhaps about 10 to 12 coins. Included among the survivors are examples in both the Smithsonian Institution and the ANS. Few proof 1872 double eagles have been offered over the years, including those in the Garrett, Eliasberg, and Carter collections. There was not an example in the extensive Harry Bass collection. Most other auction appearances, as infrequent as they are, are reappearances of small number of survivors. This example is only the second proof we have offered since 1993. The first appeared earlier this year in our FUN auction. Consider the proof mintage for the entire span of Type Two double eagles minted during 11 years from 1866 to 1876, just 335 coins, and then give this example the careful consideration it deserves.
From The Lake Highlands Collection.
