1872 $20 MS64 NGC. In his Guide Book of Double Eagle Gold Coins, Q. David Bowers (2004) notes that Type Two P-mint double eagles rarely circulated on the East Coast: "Most Philadelphia coins were exported and melted, while others were sent to the West. Double eagles of this mint were not used in commerce to a great extent ... " While this accounts for the availability of pieces in higher circulated grades and even lower Mint State grades, Select and finer pieces remain highly elusive. Despite an original mintage of 251,880 pieces, only five examples certified by NGC or PCGS received a grade of MS63 or better, and of those five, this is the only one graded MS64, with none finer at either service (6/07).
Winter and Fuljenz, in their Type Two Double Eagles 1866-1876, comment on how challenging finding visually appealing 1872 double eagles can be: "It is possible to locate a specimen with well-defined hair, sharp stars and a crisply detailed reverse. It is not as easy, however, to find a piece which has clean surfaces." Both sides of this immensely appealing near-Gem display strong detail, especially the frosty portrait. The fields, which have a blend of lemon-gold and honey color, exhibit powerful luster. Unlike the vast majority of Mint State pieces, this example has a clean appearance, with none of the heavy, distracting marks found on almost every other representative. Though a handful of light marks on the cheek and in the fields preclude Gem status, this Type Two double eagle easily qualifies as Choice. A marvelous piece that offers an unparalleled opportunity for the discerning date collector.

Coin Engraver: James B.
