1872 $2 1/2 Barber's Amazonian Head Quarter Eagle, Judd-1231, Pollock-1373, Low R.7, PR64 Gilt NGC. William Barber's "Amazonian Gold" design, similar to the gold dollar pattern except the denomination is expressed as 2 1/2 DOL. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. About a dozen examples of each denomination Amazonian gold piece are known in copper, several of them gilded. On this quarter eagle, the lowest curl is heavier than seen on the gold dollar, and the back curl joins star 13. The date is placed farther to the right with the digit 1 well right of the vertical neck line. Some of the stars are placed differently. On the reverse, lettering is an entirely different font and spaced well in from the border. The gold dollar has more of a "federal style" of lettering while the quarter eagle has a "Paquet style" lettering. Several die lines are evident on Liberty's neck and cheek. Brilliant yellow-gold surfaces with satiny luster and freckled coppery toning.
From The Jones Beach Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
