1872 1C MS64 Red PCGS. Like the 1871, the 1872 wa
1872<1C> MS64 Red PCGS. Like the 1871, the 1872 was produced in limited numbers because the Mint's supply of Half Cents and Large Cents for recoinage had dwindled to unacceptably low levels. The 1872, in turn, would also suffer from the melting that affected many late date Half Cents and Large Cents, as well as some of the earlier issues in this series. Apparently, the public redeemed many 1872 Cents in the 1873-1875 period, all of which were undoubtedly melted by the Mint to provide copper for its delivery of Cents in those years. The striking details of this Choice golden-tan example are noticeably varied. The obverse is very well defined while considerable mushiness is noticed over the entire reverse, no doubt the stumbling block to a Gem rating. Population: 42 in 64, 13 finer (3/05).
