<B>1872 $10 PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC.</B></I> In either proof or business strike format, the 1872 is a formidable rarity. The business strike had a mintage of just 1,620 pieces, few of which have survived the passage of time. NGC has certified only 23 pieces, approximately one per year of the firm's existence. Only one of those pieces has achieved a Mint State designation. Given the extreme rarity of high grade examples, it is little wonder that many famous collectors, such as Eliasberg and Trompeter, chose to collect proofs instead of business strikes. The eye appeal of a Choice proof is superior to virtually any business strike, since nearly all business strikes lack full mint luster or cameo contrast and are often abraded from their stint in commerce.<BR> In terms of the number of survivors, proofs are even rarer than business strikes. Thirty pieces were struck in 1872, but it is likely that several of those coins no longer exist or are impaired. The reason for this is that the high face value of an eagle dwarfed its numismatic premium prior to 1940, and the temptation was strong for both heirs and dealers to deposit or spend their acquisition.<BR> Several quality proofs do exist, but NGC has certified only seven specimens, four as Cameo and three as Ultra Cameo. It is possible, even likely, that there are duplications within that number, given the high economic incentive for owners to remove the proofs from their holders and resubmit them for possible upgrades.<BR> The present piece is remarkable for its pronounced contrast between the devices and fields. The razor-sharp motifs are radiant, and appear to float above the mirrored surfaces. A loupe reveals a few trivial obverse hairlines, but the reverse is nearly immaculate, and the overall eye appeal is magnificent.
