1872 $10 Amazonian Ten Dollar, Judd-1246, Pollock-1388, Low R.7, PR65 Red PCGS. This pattern issue may be Low Rarity-7, suggesting 10 to 12 pieces are known, but we can't imagine any of the others being remotely as nice as this. Although there are always surprises in numismatics, this seems like it ought to be a "lock" finest known example. Indeed, this is the only one to be certified by PCGS at this grade level, and known of similar quality have been certified by NGC. The only other example of this pattern issue to be certified by PCGS is a PR61 Red and Brown example. NGC has certified a single PR64 Brown example along with a couple lower quality Gilt examples of this pattern issue. Incredibly, this is the first time that we have offered an example of this pattern issue in all of auctions since 1993.
In the recently published United States Pattern Coins, this coin is incorrectly recorded as "GEMPRBN." It is a Gem Proof, but it is hardly brown. The surfaces on both sides have glowing deep orange mint color with slight mellowing to light brown in areas, with a couple small spots for pedigree purposes. We cannot describe this coin any better than David Akers did in his catalog of the Pittman Sale in October 1997: "This copper pattern has an absolutely sensational overall appearance due to its fabulous multicolored iridescent toning over brilliant mirror fields. There are a few tiny spots on the face and a few others scattered in the fields, but the coin has no hairlines, scratches, marks or other impairments that have occurred since striking. Light die striations from die polishing run diagonally on the reverse. The coin is very boldly struck with a partial wire rim and full design details, but it is the gorgeous sunset toning that gives this piece its superb eye appeal."
Ex: Lenox Lohr Collection (Empire Coin Company, 8/61); John Jay Pittman (David Akers, October 1997), lot 804. Lot:9864
