<B>1871-S $5 AU55 NGC.</B></I> Like other San Francisco half eagles prior to 1878, the 1871-S is rare regardless of grade. Only 25,000 pieces were struck, and NGC has only certified a single piece as Mint State. This slightly subdued and typically struck example shows only a trace of wear on Liberty's eyebrow and shoulder. The date is lightly repunched south.
