1871-S $20 MS63 PCGS. Despite the plentiful mintage of 928,000 pieces and extensive repatriation, the 1871-S remains highly elusive in upper-end grades. Garrett and Guth (2006) offer the following comments: "Examples in MS60 and MS61 are usually the best available. There are a few choice coins known for the date, but they are rarely offered for sale."
Though infrequent, such offerings do occur, as this noteworthy MS63 representative demonstrates. While the stars and portrait show a measure of softness, a typical aspect of this Type Two S-mint issue, the yellow-gold and canary surfaces offer lively luster. The light, scattered abrasions that account for the grade have little impact on the overall eye appeal as well. An excellent selection for the discerning collector. Population: 1 in 63, 1 finer (10/07).

Coin Engraver: James B.
