1871 Proof Set PR65 to PR66 PCGS. A lovely well-matched set, with all the silver coins having consistent deep-blue hues, as though they had been stored together for many years. Lacking only the trime, the set includes:

Cent PR65 Red. Lustrous tan-gold obverse, with sunset-orange reverse. The strike is extremely strong, and all feather tips are bold. 71 far apart. A single dark spot is noted at 9:30 on the obverse rim, but nonetheless quite attractive.

Two Cent PR66 Red. New hub as per Breen, berry nearest left scroll end elongated, doubling visible on right arrows and WE TRUST; 71 nearly touch. Sunset-orange obverse peripheries with magenta in the shield. The reverse is a pleasing copper-orange with nice device contrast. A problem-free piece, high-end and pretty.

Three Cent Nickel PR65. Good field-device contrast on the largely untoned surfaces. A hint of light gray haze is noted on each side, visible under a loupe. Proofs of this issue are under some pressure from the small business strike mintage of 604,000 pieces. A tiny planchet lamination is noted on the rim between OF and A.

Nickel PR65. The obverse on its own would merit a Cameo designation, although the reverse lacks sufficient contrast. A well struck piece with a few light flecks in the fields visible under a loupe. Also under considerable pressure from business strikes due to the low mintage of 561,000 pieces. The 71 touch in the date, per Breen second die, and the top of the second shield stripe is noticeably incomplete at the right.

Half Dime PR66. V-1. The 71 almost touch. A bit of die rust shows as tiny field dots around Liberty's head. The top of the D in UNITED is open. Beautiful ocean-blue toning predominates in the centers, complementing pastel rose at the rims, with flashy luster and excellent contrast that merits a Cameo designation (although not noted on theholder). A nice Premium Gem proof.

Dime PR66. Similar color to the half dime, with deep blue but this time with apple-green near the rims, an extremely bold and detailed strike on this lovely piece, especially on Liberty's head, but all areas are sharp. A small die crack joins the ribbons below the bowknot to the right bottom of the wreath. Faint die clashing is visible on the reverse. 71 nearly touch in the date. Excellent contrast on both sides.

Quarter PR65. Deep ocean-blue centers with lilac and jade-green near the rims, and excellent field-device contrast. The 71 are apart; the shield point is slightly right of the upright of the 1 in the date. A well-struck Gem.

Half Dollar PR65. The blue color is slightly less intense than on the smaller silver coins; tinges of lilac show at the centers. The 71 are apart, and the toe is open due to die lapping. Well struck, with a curving lintmark on Liberty's bodice above the neckline.

Dollar PR65. B-2. 71 nearly touch; scarcer than B-1. Jade-green in the exergue, with blue obverse. The reverse adds sunset-orange in the centers. A well struck and delightful Gem.
