<B>1871-CC $5 AU55 PCGS.</B></I> Variety 1-A, which employs the same reverse die as on the 1870-CC. Beautifully lustrous yellow-gold surfaces are the hallmark of this Choice AU half eagle, one of nearly 21,000 pieces struck in the second year of the Carson City Mint. Although this issue is seen more often than any other CC issue from 1870 to 1873, pieces are nonetheless rare in any grade, and the average example is only about Choice XF or so. This coin is well struck, even though light softness appears in the usual areas. Light clash marks show on each side, and a few light abrasions are consistent with the Choice AU grade assessed.
